North Coast Oregon Community Resource Project
South West Washington Community Resource Project
At this time this is not a business concern.
There is no guarantee this will make any difference to the community
or to the people who involve themselves with it. This site is being
developed to research the usefullness of the structure and content of the sites.
If it does make a difference.
then we can worry about turning it into a business venture.
President Obama wants us to do what we can to help our communities
This is my effort, and with the help of my wife, Kate,
we will give this a try and hopefully something interesting will grow out of it.
So far things are looking good, but there is no real proof.
Several years ago an article published in The New York Times showcase of Astoria.
The article was
written by Susan G. Hauser.
I recognized it as the
perfect instrument for the businesses of the area. I wanted to see if there
was a way to leverage
the information. Several weeks went by as I discussed ideas with friends. Luckily after working on
the infrastructure for an idea, I discovered Google Business, Google Local, Google Maps and
Google
Earth, which were developed for this purpose. I immediately gave Google Business a try. I filled out
the information for
myself and several other businesses. Within a short period of time, using
the Google's search engine led me to my web site. I
thought if
it worked for me it would work for others. I began spreading the word of Google's possibilities.
Then I read "What you need to know about the Semantic Web"
by Tom Iluse in the February 2009 issue of the Harvard Business Review. In the article, it stated:
"The semantic web - a way of organizing and presenting web
content not as documents but as items of data that
are linked by both meaning and relationship."
It really got my attention when I read the last paragraph of the article.
"Perhaps most important, try to see the semantic web from your
customers'
perspective. They don't care what it's called, only what it does. The enhanced
customer experience resulting from services that draw on a global web
of highly relevant data will render obsolete many websites
that are considered today's best in class."
I have never felt the problem was solved.
A person could get their business listed on Google.
This surely helps but more can be done, but what?
Quoted from the W3 OWL Web Ontology Language Guide
"The World Wide Web as
it is currently constituted resembles a poorly mapped geography.
Our insight into the documents and capabilities available are
based on keyword searches, abetted by clever use of document
connectivity and usage patterns. The sheer mass of this data
is unmanageable without powerful tool support. In order to map
this terrain more precisely, computational agents require machine-readable
descriptions of the content and capabilities of Web accessible resources.
These descriptions must be in addition to the human-readable versions
of that information.
The OWL Web Ontology Language is intended to provide a language that
can be used to describe the classes and relations between them that
are inherent in Web documents and applications.
This document demonstrates the use of the OWL language to:
1. formalize a domain by defining classes and properties of those classes,
2. define individuals and assert properties about them, and
3. reason about these classes and individuals to the degree permitted by
the formal semantics of the OWL language."
The possibiltiy of this was first mentioned by
Berners-Lee, Tim; James Hendler and Ora Lassila (May 17, 2001).

is one of the first mainstream magazines to mention the
concepts allowing for a different functioning of the Web.
Technically speaking RDF or Resource Description Framework is the platform
for items, concepts, ideas, i.e, to be specifically defined
and presented so they can be cached for search engine query.
Only items relating to the the query should appear
on the first page. There is now a real solution for being found on the web.
The playing field is leveled.
It is my goal to help each interested person can write their own
RDF file. I am working on a few test cases and await their completion.
I want to be able to show results.
So now to the reason for building the North Coast Oregon Community Resource Project
and the South West Washington Community Resource Project.
I will start in Astoria with the members of the Warrenton-Astoria Chamber of Commerce.
I hope to get to everyone, ultimately
reaching into
Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties. This is a rather large and time
consuming project. I will interface with the
other efforts to
inventory the resources of the area. John Goodenberger is working
on Historic Buildings and Structures.
Susan Meier is working on a number
of photographs of the area. There are many resources most
people are not aware of. This
is an attempt to bring
these efforts together in a manner that will be most affective for the area.
To maximize the effort of this venture a number of things have to happen.
Each Business, Organization, or Interested Individual needs to have a presence on the Web.
This presence can be the platform for their RDF/OWL page.
These pages need to be synchronized to each other for best results.
Those entities which already have a web page will be represented
with a link to existing Web Page,
The combination of these presences on the Web will help each
entity make a larger presence together.
Marketing the region, having an inventory of the Businesses, Organizations
and Interesting People and their resources, will show anyone who is looking
the diversity and versatility of the area.
I want to
make sure all the resources for marketing your web site are used.
These Projects will help provide the framework to help this happen.
