"Resources for Domestic and Sexual Abuse"
Note: Need Help - Get to a Phone!
Cell Phones and Pay Phones
will work without service contracts or money.
If you need help get to a
phone and call 911
they can tell where you are even if you do not!
GPS is in every cell phone less than two years old.
If you need to get away from a situation, do so,
once you leave do not return.
Returning can only make the situation worse.
And give the person you are running from another chance to harm you.
Whatever you need it can be provided for you, go to a safe place.
Remember, you are Important to me, I do not want you to be harmed or hurt.
If you are needing legal descriptions of particular words "A Layman's Guide to legal Terms"
is a
good place to start. A non-legal dictionary can be found at Your Dictionary.com this is a resource
for finding definitons and for translating non english words, unfortunately not all
languages
are convered here.

The Mid-Valley Women's Crisis Service is
an excellent web resource. This Service
offers a safe refuge and support to women and children who are surviving domestic
violence. There is a lot of information here and it is one of the first places I
recommend to view if you are near the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I especially
appreciate the fact that the site is in English, Spanish and Russian.
The Women's Rural Advocacy Programs

Gary
O'Keefe has done an excellent job at putting together information for parents.
From the
look of this page it was done by a student and I salute his effort. There must have
been
real motivation for doing al this work and I personally thank him.
As we all grow older another form of abuse is the abuse of those who are older. Elder Abuse Prevention
has the mission to prevent all forms of elder abuse via community and legislative
advocacy,
coordination of services and community and professional edcation. This service
serves
Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in California.
The most prevalent form of elder abuse is the fraud perpetuated against them.
The National Fraud Information
Center has a number of tips to help secure yourself from this activity. Please be
aware
of who you are doing your business with, ask for credentials and check with the local
Area Chamber of Commerce and the State Attorney General's Office. Remember that
if it
sounds to good to be true it probably is!
A family member was pulled into a scam. There are people who sell information and
hope
for cures and medication for diseases that most elderly fear. These people are selling
information in the form of mailing, they are selling information which is false, which
preys on the hopes and aspirations of the elderly. They put M.D. or Ph.D. behind
their
name and use aanything they can to separate the elderly person from their money. One
thing the internet can do is help to show these people for what they are. The internet
can be an avenue to for fraud, but it can also be an avenue to information so one can
find out if what these people are saying has any vaidity. In the case with the family
member we were able to go to a ??? and find that the medical information they were
selling was not referenced by any one else. As a matter of fact, most anything you
would want to know about the body and medical information can be found for free
using
the internet. Thus paying for information is almost a sign of Fraud. You should not
have to pay for information. Also be careful of non-perscrption medications. The
Natural
Suppliment industry is a tremenduously large industry. They are also not regulated
by the FDA. This means that they are up to policing themselves. Some of these
companies
will be reliable and trustworthy. Some of these companies will not be. Be careful of
purchasing drugs over the internet. The person on the other end may not be in the
Unites States and they will not be under the laws of the U.S. Thus you could be
paying a lot less for something that you ordered, but what is actually in the
medicine is up to chance. It is a lot more profitable to sell you powdered sugar
for the price of what you think you are getting.
There is an excellent 10
part article on Consumer fraud with a special emphasis on the elderly. 40
billion dollars is lost every year using fraud. This is a must read and I think it can be
copied and distributed - I will check this as everyone should read it.
SeniorCitizen.com is a site
that echos a lot of the information the previous site provides, however I have
included this site as it gives contacts to the various State Attorney Generals - and I
wanted a quick way to get from this site to that one for an one who needs the links.
This link leads to a
report from the Federal Trade Commission entitled "Health Fraud and the Elderly: A
Continuing Health Epidemic" this is the text which was resented to the U.S. Senate
Committee on Aging in September of 2001.
Victims of Fraud who are suffering emotional harm should be aware of the
information at this site. Sharing the self-doubt, betrayal, shock anger embarrassment,
guilt and blame with others can be a way to releive some of the stress and realize
that like most of life being harmed can be overcome and survived. Be sure to check
in your local area for help - many people have had this happen to them and one way
of helping yourself to get through this time is to share your pain with others - for
support and also for help in combating the perpetuators and assisting in taking legal
action.
